TTS for subtitles

Recommended Posts

I wonder if there is a good solution to having Chinese movie subtitles read to you. Ideally, I would like to have the character that is just being read highlighted (including automatic scrolling), so I can keep track more easily. Also, it would be great if I could (optionally) see the English translation and pinyin support.

Currently, I have found this TTS site, which I like a lot: https://www.xfyun.cn/services/online_tts

However, it does not do the other things I mentioned above.

Here is a sample from the movie The Grandmaster:

Quote

Kung fu: two words.

功夫-两个字

Horizontal. Vertical.

一横一竖

Make a mistake, horizontal.

错的  躺下喽

Stay standing and you win.

站着的才有资格讲话

Isn't that right?

你说这话对吗

Not bad.

好功夫啊

A master of Wing Chun.

陈华顺的关门弟子

The new hope of the South.

佛山无敌啊

What's his name?

叫什么名字啊?

I'm curious as to why you would want to do this. Movies are such a great source of audio, with dialogue created by and for native Chinese speakers. The perfect learning resource. Why have TTS  butcher the audio?

I would recommend instead using Subs2SRS to create flashcards with sentences extracted from the movie/TV show, then use Imron's Chinese Text Analyzer to add definitions/pinyin of unknown words, as described here.

@Jan Finster how are you using this?  Web API or downloaded TTS voice?  Which OS?

I just played around with it for a day or two. Have not looked at it in months.
