Hello everybody,

I am looking for a translation for the english word ubiquitous.

The word means (omni)present/found everywhere and is often used in the field of computer science (for example to describe the internet of things).

Is someone here able to translate ubiquitous to mandarin?

MDBG has    到处可见    dào chù kě jiàn    ubiquitous / commonplace / found everywhere

Not a native speaker™, but I think 无所不在 and 到处可见 are different in a way that will matter to the OP.

  • 无所不在 emphasizes the objective aspect of ubiquity. Something is/exists everywhere.
  • 到处可见 emphasizes the subjective aspect of ubiquity. Something can be perceived/observed everywhere.

Agree with above, but high preference for 無處不在 over 無所不在 for me.

Can you explain why you have that preference?

Which one does apply more in the context of internet of things, interconnected devices in our environment.

无所不在 or 到处可见?

I personally lean towards 无所不在 but am not sure …

I just feel a really strong association with 無所不知、無所不能、無所不在 that feels religious to me but I know it doesn't actually affect the meaning of the word.

If you are only picking between 無所不在 and 到處可見, your choice is easy and you should pick the first one.

Omniscient, omnipresent, imminent, infinite, and foreknowing are apt descriptors of the Internet of Things. Modern man imbues the machines he builds with attributes that represented, until recently, the exclusive province of the Divine.

Some of us can’t help but reflect on the awesome power of civilization-transforming inventions like nuclear bombs and computers that talk to each other from opposite ends of the Earth. There’s nothing 装 (false, pretend, put on) about it.
