Pronouncing the Chinese name Ye

Hi everyone,

I know a Chinese lady whose name is Ye. I am not sure how to pronounce her name. Is it /ʊ/ which has the same vowel sound as “took” or is it /ɛ/ which has the same vowel sound as “tech”? (If geographical location is important, the location is Wuxi, Jiangsu.)

For the fine points, spend a few pleasant hours watching one or two of the 叶问 classic movies. Excellent kung fu, well staged, well acted. They star 甄子丹 (Donnie Yen.)

That is so cool someone put up a YouTube video just to pronounce that one syllable/name!

I have a terminal case of being tone-challenged. (What a pity...) But yes, we must always remind ourselves that the job is not done until the "Chinese-tone taxman" has been paid.

Thanks for those movies. It is always great to see things that help reinforce what we are learning.
