jannesan Posted June 28, 2019 at 03:12 PM Report Posted June 28, 2019 at 03:12 PM Hello everyone, can someone recommend a comprehensive online monolingual dictionary? Actually if it's a mobile app that would be fine too. Information that I would like to be able to see for each entry includes the 量词 if it's a noun and what word class the word can be, combined with examples for all the different usages. thanks:) Quote
Wurstmann Posted June 28, 2019 at 03:56 PM Report Posted June 28, 2019 at 03:56 PM Mobile: Pleco with 现代汉语规范词典 and 现代汉语大辞典. Desktop: Haven't found anything comparable so far. So I just use http://dict.youdao.com and https://dict.baidu.com/. I made custom rules for my adblocker to hide all English text on the page. https://www.moedict.tw if you want traditional. Quote
889 Posted June 28, 2019 at 04:52 PM Report Posted June 28, 2019 at 04:52 PM Surprisingly, Wenlin is now making the online version of the ABC Dictionary available for purchase for free. Yes, you have to add it to your cart and purchase it for $0.00 -- no credit card required -- then sign in each time, but the price is certainly right and the dictionary itself is an invaluable resource. Though like the PC version of Wenlin, it has a dated rather clunky interface. https://wenlinshangdian.com/ Hopefully the subscription won't turn out to be a trial that suddenly ends one day. EDIT: Sorry I didn't notice you wanted a Chinese-only dictionary. The ABC Dictionary isn't, but it's still a very good tool to have in your kit. Quote
Luxi Posted June 29, 2019 at 07:37 PM Report Posted June 29, 2019 at 07:37 PM This is a Chinese-English dictionary, but very useful for class, measure words, radical & components, some examples, and animations, all on one card https://www.trainchinese.com/v2/index.php?rAp=0 The dictionary can be used without registration but there are also PC, Android and iOS apps. For monolingual, this everything page leads you to some interesting dictionaries (your browser will say the site is 'unsecured', but it is a safe site without ads and doesn't require any personal information) http://www.guoxuedashi.com/ Quote
jannesan Posted July 1, 2019 at 07:06 PM Author Report Posted July 1, 2019 at 07:06 PM thanks everyone for your replies! i'm gonna have a look through the websites mentioned here and see which one i find most productive:) On 6/28/2019 at 5:56 PM, Wurstmann said: Pleco with 现代汉语规范词典 and 现代汉语大辞典 so which of the two would you recommend more? can you go a bit into the differences between them? given they are both not free i would prefer to just get one:) Quote
Wurstmann Posted July 1, 2019 at 07:41 PM Report Posted July 1, 2019 at 07:41 PM @jannesan Just download the demo version of both and look at a few definitions. I think 现代汉语规范词典 often has more concise definitions which can make it harder to understand for beginners. Quote
mungouk Posted July 3, 2019 at 12:47 PM Report Posted July 3, 2019 at 12:47 PM How about a Chinese Thesaurus, online or otherwise? Any recommendations? Quote

murrayjames Posted July 4, 2019 at 03:36 PM Report Posted July 4, 2019 at 03:36 PM To piggyback on what @Luxi said above, try searching on Baidu or Google for the word in question plus "同义词" (or "反义词"). This has worked for me in the past. 1 Quote
mungouk Posted July 4, 2019 at 03:41 PM Report Posted July 4, 2019 at 03:41 PM So doesn't Chinese really have the equivalent of a Thesaurus? Quote
murrayjames Posted July 4, 2019 at 03:50 PM Report Posted July 4, 2019 at 03:50 PM Turns out there are Chinese thesauruses online. Lots of 'em. Search for 同义词词典. 1 Quote
mungouk Posted July 4, 2019 at 03:54 PM Report Posted July 4, 2019 at 03:54 PM Thanks. I did ask my Chinese teacher (who's great) but she didn't really seem familiar with the concept. (I did ask her about "类属词典" which is what MDBG threw up, but she wasn't convinced.) Quote
889 Posted July 4, 2019 at 05:05 PM Report Posted July 4, 2019 at 05:05 PM Head to a book city 书城 and explore the Chinese reference books. Lots of things there you'll enjoy buying and putting on your bookshelf. Never to be opened again. (And yes, I've got a 同义词词典 gathering dust somewhere. Just can't find it.) 1 Quote
