Chunn Posted September 6, 2005 at 03:59 AM Report Posted September 6, 2005 at 03:59 AM These couple days I have just checked some online dictionary recommended by here and there. The most famous site may be zhongwen.com or mandarintools.com, and I have often been check for words over there. But I just found www.xuezhongwen.net and its simple dictionary today, don't know much about its background, but I really think this is what I have been looking for, it make sense and best for beginning learners. Vote for them! Anyway, wanna know which is your favourite. Quote
gougou Posted September 6, 2005 at 04:49 AM Report Posted September 6, 2005 at 04:49 AM I mostly use the one at http://www.tigernt.com . But that is not because I deem it the best, it just happened to be the first whose address I was able to miraculously retain... Quote
skylee Posted September 6, 2005 at 06:18 AM Report Posted September 6, 2005 at 06:18 AM I use these -> 林語堂《當代漢英詞典》電子版 -> http://www.arts.cuhk.edu.hk/Lexis/Lindict/ 線上英漢字典 -> http://cdict.giga.net.tw/ 在线新华字典 -> http://www.lfzz.cn/tools/dict.asp http://www.fzepc.com/chinapoem/word.asp Quote
atitarev Posted September 6, 2005 at 06:35 AM Report Posted September 6, 2005 at 06:35 AM I use this: http://www.mdbg.net/chindict/chindict.php Quote
Lu Posted September 6, 2005 at 01:28 PM Report Posted September 6, 2005 at 01:28 PM I use zhongwen.com, not so much for the translations it provides (for it is not that big a dictionary), but for the great search functions. As soon as I've found the pronounciation I can easily look up the character in my big paper dictionary :-) Quote
johnmck Posted September 6, 2005 at 04:06 PM Report Posted September 6, 2005 at 04:06 PM I use zhongwen as its descriptions of characters is useful for remembering their form (even if I am learning simple characters). I use http://www.mdbg.net/chindict/chindict.php for finding stroke orders. Quote
laohu489 Posted September 6, 2005 at 10:35 PM Report Posted September 6, 2005 at 10:35 PM I only use MDBG free online Chinese-English dictionary for all of my translation needs (and that is saying a lot). BTW, xuezhongwen.net and MDBG are the same place. Quote
atitarev Posted September 6, 2005 at 10:43 PM Report Posted September 6, 2005 at 10:43 PM Is MDBG winning so far? I counted 3 votes including mine. Quote

Long Zhiren Posted September 28, 2005 at 05:10 PM Report Posted September 28, 2005 at 05:10 PM This thread is great. mandarintools has a great format but comes up short half the time with less common characters. It does better when you enter in the pinyin. Its links to translations of character sequences is quite nice. http://cdict.giga.net.tw is so far finding every traditional character that mandarintools is not. MDBG is quite nice! What do the non-English speaking folks use for Chinese Dictionary translation tools? Quote
stephanhodges Posted October 2, 2005 at 09:08 PM Report Posted October 2, 2005 at 09:08 PM Here's one I don't see mentioned. It's especially usefull for those of us who can only read Pinyin: http://www.yellowbridge.com/language/worddict.html However, the cool part is what they're doing with the dictionary themselves. Check out this: http://www.yellowbridge.com/general/translator.html and a "pager codes" dictionary page here: http://www.yellowbridge.com/language/pagercodes.html Quote
Long Zhiren Posted July 28, 2006 at 05:21 AM Report Posted July 28, 2006 at 05:21 AM ...thought I'd resurrect this thread. MDBG's website is now soliciting donations for its operations. I don't know if the solicit is genuine, but I think it's worth a try and a worthy cause. Has it been soliciting donations for a long time? I don't know. I just noticed today. Quote
adrianlondon Posted July 28, 2006 at 08:49 AM Report Posted July 28, 2006 at 08:49 AM I like the pony :-) (pony is a little horse! Sorry, I'm in a stupid mood). http://hmarty.free.fr/hanzi/ Quote

boomerang Posted August 10, 2006 at 02:17 AM Report Posted August 10, 2006 at 02:17 AM I used mandarintools for a long time, but after seeing this thread, I have now switched over to MDBG. I like the interface a lot better, haven't pushed its limits yet. I like what I see.. Quote
Kathy Posted August 14, 2006 at 12:04 AM Report Posted August 14, 2006 at 12:04 AM Although I think the other dictionaries mentioned above are great - especially for seasoned learners, I think the dictionaries at www.yellowbridge.com are especially good for beginners. The user interface is easy to understand and you can copy and paste the dictionary entries. If you are interested in a pinyin conbination chart, check out http://www.chinesepod.com/pinyin_intro.php Good luck! Quote
mandarinboy Posted August 14, 2006 at 11:36 AM Report Posted August 14, 2006 at 11:36 AM I know many have mentioned yellowbridge, but have you tested their best feature? http://www.yellowbridge.com/language/chinese-dictionary.php Search on a word and then click the character etymology tab. This is , acording my opinion, much better than even zhongwen.com's. Clear, fast, easy to understand. I would love to know where they have got the dictionary file for that from. It is as i can se only the traditional forms that is described so maybe they are usign the same data as on zhongwen.com. On the other hand, zhongwen.com also gives you the simplified version. Hmm, realy would like to know. Quote
Lu Posted August 14, 2006 at 05:36 PM Report Posted August 14, 2006 at 05:36 PM I already answered this thread but that was before I found Baidu's online dictionary. Quite useful, definately better that either Adso or Zhongwen.com Quote
gato Posted August 14, 2006 at 05:43 PM Report Posted August 14, 2006 at 05:43 PM Dict.cn is one of the best of I've seen, mostly because of the examples it gives for each entry. http://sh.dict.cn/en/search/ Quote
