Ian_Lee Posted September 6, 2005 at 08:49 PM Report Posted September 6, 2005 at 08:49 PM Has anyone ever read 封神榜? I never did. But I am more interested and familiar with the stories in this novel than Water Margin/Three Kingdoms/Red Chamber due to a year long radio program on this novel I listened to during my childhood. And lately I found out that how come there are so many similarities between Homer's poems and 封神榜? Now I suspect that maybe long before the establishment of the Silk Road, ancient Zhou Dynasty might have conduit of communication with those Greek City states in the Aegean Sea! Out of the numerous stories in 封神榜, the one I like best is about 空心菜! Actually in terms of imagination, 封神榜 even surpasses "Monkey King"! Quote
Outofin Posted September 6, 2005 at 10:15 PM Report Posted September 6, 2005 at 10:15 PM I'm not very familiar with the book because I was really scared by some stories from it (and from 聊斋) when I was a child. Though I know some names like 哪吒 and 土行孙. Could you give some examples of the similarities between it and Homer's poems? Quote
eddiewouldgo Posted September 6, 2005 at 11:44 PM Report Posted September 6, 2005 at 11:44 PM I have seen several TV series, but never got to read the actual book itself. Quote
cat_star Posted September 7, 2005 at 01:57 AM Report Posted September 7, 2005 at 01:57 AM It's a little similar as <>(西游记), also a fairy tale, but have archetypes in realism history. Quote
chenpv Posted September 8, 2005 at 07:11 AM Report Posted September 8, 2005 at 07:11 AM I think you are talking about the book 《封神演义》written by 陈仲琳. It is another legendary noval which is based on the history of Shang and Zhou Dynasties. In my opinion, the TV series 封神榜 were a success in coping with the plot of the original work, which is more accessible to us. But if you are reading the original work, I am afraid that you will find the writing finesse rather plain and pedestrian, as if all the chapters were made from the same mould. which is far away from reaching the level of 'A Journey to the West.'
