ibag Posted August 30, 2019 at 03:03 PM Author Report Posted August 30, 2019 at 03:03 PM Thank you @899 at first. The word "freind" is a clerical error, I'm sorry about that. "clear up suspicions" means "eliminate doubts"(消除疑虑) about chinese. I translated it from a website tool, and I've known it's not right now. I said "if you had any question" for the subjunctive mood like "If I were you", but you are right! "I will appreciate" did not use subjunctive mood deliberately, because I am sure to do that. I think it is Ok too. 2 Quote

889 Posted August 31, 2019 at 12:53 AM Report Posted August 31, 2019 at 12:53 AM First, thank you @889. The word "freind" is a typing error; I'm sorry about that. To "clear up suspicions" means "eliminate doubts" (消除疑虑) in Chinese. I translated it from a website tool, and I now know it's not right. I said, "if you had any question" using the subjunctive mood, like "If I were you," but you are right: it's wrong here! Writing "I will appreciate," I deliberately did not use the subjunctive mood, because I wasn't sure it is correct. I think it is. Compare: If you have any questions, I will answer them. If you'd [have] had any questions, I would have answered them. 1 Quote

ibag Posted September 1, 2019 at 03:06 PM Author Report Posted September 1, 2019 at 03:06 PM @suMMit 您的发音已经很好了, 不必太在意发音, 尤其是对于一些细微的变化. 因为中国各个地方的发音都不一样. 即使您的发音和北京人一样, 到了上海也是个外地人, 像我一样. 您把字典上标准的4种声调读好就很好了. Your pronunciation is good enough, no need to care too much, especially for some subtle shading. Because pronunciation from all over the China are different. Even if it's exactly the same to a Beijing local people. You are also a stranger in Shanghai like me. You just need to speak the standard four tones well, according to a dictionary, then everything is all right. Quote

I've been a teacher in various parts of Asia and I've always thought of "clearing a doubt" as being an old colonial English way of asking for someone to answer a question, or address a concern. I first heard it from Indian students, in India and then Singapore and beyond, but maybe it's a fossilised piece of English that has persisted in the old Empire? 1 Quote
