What are you listening to?

I’d like to start a new thread that is kind of the audio equivalent of the What are you reading thread. Here you can share the podcasts, audio books, lectures, songs, etc that you think are worthy of attention. I think videos are OK too if the most important aspect is the audio, for example an interview, roundtable discussion, monologue, etc.

I’ve been listening to 故事FM for a while and was a bit surprised to see that it was featured by an NPR podcast I sometimes listen to: https://www.npr.org/2019/09/04/757473374/when-we-talk-about-love

Summary:

First, our producer Jess Jiang walks us through an episode of Gushi FM, a storytelling podcast based out of China. Terrified that her daughter will become one of China's so-called "leftover women," or an urban woman who isn't married, a mother secretly sets up an online dating profile to find her daughter a husband. We look at why the Chinese government has been stoking the anxieties of single women, and how the Chinese podcast manages to broach this topic.

They essentially translate and contextualize a specific 故事FM episode titled E244. 我的相亲之路,真香: http://storyfm.cn/episodes/e244-dating/

I recently listened the NPR podcast episode that you mentioned and I was very curious which 故事FM  it was.

But I never asked around. So thanks for this!  I am going to give it a listen sometime soon.

I recently discovered a new podcast and it’s the best one I’ve encountered since 故事FM: https://www.buzzsprout.com/258327. It’s called Loud Murmurs and it’s basically a pop culture roundtable with the occasional expert guest. In many ways, it doesn’t stand out from other, similar podcasts that have come before it. However, the big differentiator is that this podcast attracted the ire of censors, yet it managed to survive. Most Chinese-language podcasts that fall under the scrutiny of government censorship either have to tone down their content or accept being de-platformed. Either way, the podcast dies. This one is still chugging, though it probably helps that the hosts all live and work in the US.

You need pretty good listening skills to consume this show, but it helps that all summaries are written in English. A great English-language introduction to the show is here: https://supchina.com/podcast/izzy-niu-on-the-chinese-diaspora-and-popular-culture/. The best recent episode is probably their 2019 year-end retrospective.
