What was that guy called? A something? With the vignettes that illustrated life 80-150 years ago?

I remember there were these parable-like stories, where the man was called A something like A Jin, and he would go through some kind of experience, and that would tell us about Chinese society.  The stories were quite short and A whoever was frequently a jerk.  Ring a bell for anyone?
