gougou Posted September 19, 2005 at 07:57 AM Report Posted September 19, 2005 at 07:57 AM 图穷匕现, so it has a different character at the endIn fact, according to my memory (which would negligible) and the Microsoft IME (which is the only other tool I have at hand for the moment), it should be 图穷匕见 - tu2qiong2bi3xian4. HashiriKata Posted September 19, 2005 at 08:07 AM Report Posted September 19, 2005 at 08:07 AM This is interesting, as I only know that 见 is pronounced as jian4 现 as xian4. I'll look into it. Quote
elina Posted September 19, 2005 at 08:23 AM Author Report Posted September 19, 2005 at 08:23 AM 1. Sorry for the typo, you’re right, HashiriKata, it should be tu2 qiong2 bi4 jian4 2. This Chinese idiom: 图穷匕见 can be also called 图穷匕现, the meaning is the same. when I wrote it, I think that 见 is easy to be followed than 现, so I chose见, hoping this thread can last longer 3. Because my English is not very well, so I used 金山词霸 to help me translate it into English. But in金山词霸, it showed that this Chinese idiom’s Pin Yin is: tu2 qiong2 bi3 jian4, I think it was wrong, 匕 should be pronounced as bi4 in Pin Yin. I had an English-Chinese dictionary on hand. So I checked up dagger / 匕首, the dictionary also proved that I was right. That’s the origin of tu2 qiong2 bi4 jian4 I do not know how to insert an image on this forum, so please check the link (the opening speed may be a little slow): http://photo.163.com/openpic.php?user=elinasatter&pid=395148543&_dir=%2F16423759 Quote
gougou Posted September 19, 2005 at 09:15 AM Report Posted September 19, 2005 at 09:15 AM Just had a look into it: People's Education Press 中文中“见”和“现”通用,所以虽然写成“图穷匕见”,要读成图穷匕“现”才对 Quote
elina Posted September 19, 2005 at 10:02 AM Author Report Posted September 19, 2005 at 10:02 AM It is strange, there are two kinds of explanation on the Pin Yin of 见 and 现: resource 1: http://www.zxxw.net/chengyu/index.asp?fl1=1&fl2=20 check 图穷匕首见 and图穷匕见, it is the same as what gougou said in the former post. But resource 2: http://cy.dearinfo.com/3449.html 图穷匕首见 http://cy.dearinfo.com/3450.html 图穷匕见 The Pin Yin of resource 2 is also the same as 金山词霸, and I remember when I was at school, my teacher taught us 见 in this way too. But for 匕, my teacher taught us as bi4, and the dictionary which I linked also says it is bi4 shou3, my colleagues say it is bi4 too. I do not know why the resource 1 and resource 2, as well as other resource say it as bi3 Quote
gougou Posted September 19, 2005 at 11:01 AM Report Posted September 19, 2005 at 11:01 AM Aiya... "A man with one watch knows what time it is. A man with two watches is never sure." Guess that goes the same for Chinese and its dictionaries... Quote
HashiriKata Posted September 20, 2005 at 07:59 AM Report Posted September 20, 2005 at 07:59 AM So, I guess 见 being pronounced as "xian4", or "xian4" written as 见, must have started off as a mistake (just like the Brittish using the folk upside down for eating ) But please don't forget the game: 见多识广 jian4duo1 shi2guang3 experienced & knowledgeable Quote

So 之乎者也 means "talking non-sense while pretending knowledgeable". Quote
