I am not familiar with that area but there are a number of hotel chains that are now pretty cheap Super 8, HuiJia....The last time I stay in a hostel, it cost me 140 rmb.  Some of the hotels listed are only 180 or so.  Another thing to consider...unless things have changed in the past year, a lot of hostels cannot host a person with a foreign passport.  As of a year ago, in order for any hospitality business to provide sleeping accommodations for a non-Chinese citizen, they had to pay a "registration fee" to the government.  Apparently that fee is high enough to have put most hostels out of the LEGAL BUSINESS of hostel an international....though some will do it, but if you are caught, you may likely find yourself paying a large fee, spending the night in jail or being escorted to the nearest airport for an early departure.  I am not sure if this would prevent you from getting another visa for the country.
