Document Authentication

Anyone have a solid source for document authentication (tefl)?

I've got agencies asking for 3800, for what I know to be a few hundred RMB process

You don't mention where this needs to be authenticated. But if you ask a service in China to arrange for authentication in your home country, of course that will cost. Almost certainly cheaper to find a document service in your home country and have them arrange the authentication. But with flight disruptions now, mail and courier services may be slower than usual.

For most countries TEFL legalization is a three-step process. Even if you do it personally in your home country and do not add in travel expenses, your personal time etc, the official fees collected will already amount to the equivalent of a few hundred RMB ? But it clearly depends on where you received your TEFL, cost varies between different countries.

I recently got 2 documents legalised at the Chinese visa service in Manchester UK (this is now outsourced by the consulate there).

Cost was GBP 47 per document, which is around ¥420 each.

These were a degree certificate and criminal background check, which had already been authenticated/legalised by a solicitor (certified copy/certified original) and then the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in the UK (adding an apostille), which cost GBP 5 per document for the solicitor and GBP 30 for the FCO, so around another ¥315 per document before I could take them to the visa service.

So that's around ¥735 per document doing it in the UK, not including postage charges to/from the FCO.

I also had to travel to Manchester on the train twice to submit and collect the docs, at an additional cost of GBP 22 each time, so add another ¥400 to that.
