889 Posted March 21, 2020 at 05:23 PM Report Posted March 21, 2020 at 05:23 PM The left is obviously 生意興隆, a trite New Year's wish for prosperous business. A shot of the whole thing might hint the right. Quote
Tomsima Posted March 21, 2020 at 05:25 PM Report Posted March 21, 2020 at 05:25 PM The left hand column reads 生意興隆 a common saying wishing success in business. The right hand column is a mystery to me, the second character is 權, the rest I can only speculate similar cursive forms, the author is perhaps not fully adept at writing in full cursive so has made some mistakes in their 草法: 1. 無,莫 3. 阿,何 4. 有,多 bizarre Quote
889 Posted March 21, 2020 at 05:30 PM Report Posted March 21, 2020 at 05:30 PM It could be a signature, which in Chinese just as in English, tends to reflect the writer's personality damn the legibility. Except that signatures on inscriptions like this would usually be to the left. Perhaps it's the name of the person being wished. If so, the first character would most likely be found among the common family names. Quote
Tomsima Posted March 21, 2020 at 05:56 PM Report Posted March 21, 2020 at 05:56 PM interesting idea, would be useful to get some photos of any other seals on the painting which might shed some light on the authors name Quote
889 Posted March 21, 2020 at 06:00 PM Report Posted March 21, 2020 at 06:00 PM If it's for New Year's, as I suspect, there might be an appropriate animal hunkering down there in the picture, also offering a clue to those three characters. So much running around in circles when OPs don't post the whole thing up front. Quote
