I don't know how to distinguish 3 months, and March. (same with days as well as months)

 

Is there a word placed in the middle, like with 3 people?

March =           三月      Sān yuè    (third month)

3 months =     三个月  Sān gè yuè

 

gè 个 is a general-purpose measure word.
