Difference between 和，跟，与

I'm not entirely sure about the differences between 和, 跟 and 与 . 

 

Example: 很多人害怕与周围的人比较

 

Why is 与 being used in the sentence above and not 和 or 跟? are all three interchangeably?

与 is a very formal character meaning "and" just as 和

Your example sentence looks incomplete. Are you sure this is the whole sentence?

很多人害怕与周围的人比较，比较不但让失败的人更难受，而且让那些成功的人感到有压力，因为肯定还有比他们更成功的人。

 

I omitted the rest because I thought it's not relevant for my question.

Thanks!  I mostly focus on learning to speak Chinese, so my character knowledge is somewhat limit.  However, now if i see 与, I'll remember it.

 

(And Beo - thanks for posting the question!).  

 

I've often found that when I learn several ways to express the same thing, I remember them more easily.
