Discouraged by my inability to understand movies/TV

It's interesting to read this discussion.  You may be well above the following video, but I found it very insightful in explaining why I have trouble understanding some spoken Chinese.

The instructor points out how people from different regions speak Mandarin.  In many cases, my ears weren't good enough to hear that the consonant was changed, until she pointed it out.  I often just didn't fully understand them.  (this video is made up of excerpts of her earlier videos.  I think she's a talented instructor).
