HSK 3.0 ... new, new HSK?

There seem to be some bugs, e.g. #3429 in the word list is listed as 花 instead of 护照.

EDIT: looks like there are maybe two dozen bugs like this in all, after a quick check against our OCR'ed list. And the issue is definitely on their original website, not on @shawky.nasr's end:

After going through the new list I only see 1,500 individual characters. If this new list is to include 3,000 characters then are the other 1,500 included in other words? I assume some characters cannot be used in a stand-alone manner, so maybe that’s the case, but can anyone confirm this for me?

Taking the wordlist from Mike's GitHub repo, removing the English preamble text and analyzing it with Python, I count 2991 unique characters. Accounting for Roman numerals and punctuation, that works out to 2972 Chinese characters.

HSK 7-9 trial exams

The following advertisement been circulating in the Thai CSL community. I can't speak Thai (maybe @Xiao Kui is around?), but it appears that the trial exams will be free and that an HSK 6 certificate is required to apply. They'll take place on May 15, 2022.

The QR code leads to this registration link. The testing location question at the bottom lists testing centers in China, Thailand, Korea, Malaysia, and the Philippines. I'm not sure if these trial exams have been widely announced in the other countries?

We can confirm that the 7-9 exam does include a translation component though. One of the registration questions asks you to choose which language you would like to translate into Chinese on the exam. The languages listed are English, Japanese, Korean, Thai, and Vietnamese.

Ugh, I still think that's idiotic for a language proficiency test. Plus it discriminates against L1 speakers of minority languages that presumably won't be supported.

I asked on Reddit to see if anybody there took the trial HSK 7-9 exam on Sunday, and one person replied.

  • There was not a section that tested your handwriting ability, contrary to what the standards suggested.
  • No 病句 questions were on the exam.
  • There was a section that required you to arrange the paragraphs of an article into the correct order.

This may be for practical reasons during the pandemic.  I wonder if they had speaking and translation too (it's that time of year when VPNs don't work well, so I can't just ask).  It could also just be too much to cover on a single test.

Thanks for the transcript corrections!  My translation/summary of the video:

Quote

The video says there are four sections:

Listening (3 parts): (a) Listen to three long passages, then there are 5 true/false questions each (following the sequence of the speech).  (b) Multiple choice [a,b,c,d] questions, but there are gaps where you also need to fill in some words.  (c) Like HSK6 listening part 3 [listen to a speech, answer a question], but with long answers, and you need to fill in gaps.

Reading (3 parts): She twice says the interface was awkward.  (There was no equivalent to HSK6 reading parts 1 ["faulty wording"] and 2 ["fill in the gaps"].)  (a) Like HSK6 reading part 4 [where you read a passage and answer questions] but there are 7 questions per passage [instead of 4]. (b) Fill in a sentence.  (c) Like HSK6 reading part 3, we order a text, but there are 8 options, of which 3 are already done for you.

Writing (2 parts): (a) Read a passage and (i) summarize it in 200+ characters, then (ii) expand on it with your own opinions in 600+ characters. (b) Translate 300 characters of Korean into 400 characters of Chinese (20 minutes).

Speaking (2 parts): She said this is the hardest part.  (a) Translate 3 or 4 lines of Korean: 1 minute of prep time, then 2 minutes speaking time.  (b) Relative simple; there's a list or picture, and you are to explain the situation; there is 3 minutes prep time, and 3 minutes of speaking time.  (c) By far the hardest; (i) No prep time, nor subtitles, listen to a speech, then give your opinion about it for 2 minutes; (ii) same as (i) but for 3 minutes, and you need to use the whole 3 minutes.

She said it was obviously harder than the HSK6.  The student should prepare by studying current affairs, news, hot topics.

She took a computer exam, but had problems with the interface.  She doesn't mention handwriting, despite it being prominent in the new standards (I don't know what this implies---it may be related to the pandemic, or perhaps there is a separate, handwritten exam [although, in total, she says we need to write 1200 characters]).  She mentions the other two new aspects: speaking and translation.  The translations are all into Chinese (i.e., you always write and speak Chinese), not the other way around.  Presumably we have a choice of which language to translate from (I can't read Korean!).
