Insectosaurus Posted June 7, 2020 at 05:17 PM Report Share Posted June 7, 2020 at 05:17 PM Hi, I'm reading the Monster manga online and I'm a bit puzzled by what font is being used. Here is the link: https://www.manhuagui.com/comic/1119/9710.html#p=4. Some characters remind me of older traditional Chinese (and also Japanese), and at first I thought this is how characters are written in Hong Kong but that doesn't seem to be the case? Is this a common font? Thanks.
歐博思 Posted June 7, 2020 at 05:21 PM Report Share Posted June 7, 2020 at 05:21 PM Yes, those strange looking 真, 為, and a few others are common. Can't say exactly what font though.
Tomsima Posted June 7, 2020 at 05:32 PM Report Share Posted June 7, 2020 at 05:32 PM just off the top of my head it looks like a pretty standard noto sans japanese font. The 真 written with the additional 豎折 is typical of japanese fonts, but can also turn up in traditional fonts from Taiwan and HK fairly often too
Dlezcano Posted June 7, 2020 at 07:48 PM Report Share Posted June 7, 2020 at 07:48 PM That is a traditional Chinese font which is based on 旧字形, they are quite standard in Taiwan and Hongkong. You can check this 明体 font and compare the characters. http://www.fonts.net.cn/font-37036312094.html?previewText=真為視
mungouk Posted June 7, 2020 at 08:36 PM Report Share Posted June 7, 2020 at 08:36 PM 2 hours ago, Tomsima said: pretty standard noto sans japanese font. "Noto Sans" is actually a bespoke font that was designed for Google with aim of being able to use it for "all" languages and writing systems. https://www.monotype.com/resources/case-studies/more-than-800-languages-in-a-single-typeface-creating-noto-for-google The East Asian equivalent of a sans-serif font is 黑体 hēitǐ in Chinese or (apparently) ゴシック体 goshikku-tai in Japanese. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Asian_Gothic_typeface
Tomsima Posted June 7, 2020 at 08:56 PM Report Share Posted June 7, 2020 at 08:56 PM ha oops, no wonder ive always thought of it as 'standard', it would appear the goal was indeed to set an international standard
