Phonetics&radical based approach to learn characters and words

Regarding modes of working with the HSK poems I've found  two ways are the best. First one is to use the text of a poem with blank spaces for Mandarin words to recollect proper words in characters, it's the most obviose. Another one can be a reversed transcription mode, in which words stand in transcription (I use mupin) in their places in the poem, and the learner should recollect the text of the poem, not exactly, just the context, in which the words are used in it. I believe, in this mode the capability to use the words in one's speech is trained very well.
