Kenny同志 Posted September 18, 2020 at 02:31 AM Report Posted September 18, 2020 at 02:31 AM Hi folks, what would be a proper English term for 拳頭產品 (link to baidu baike)? I have seen some dictionaries who list knockout product or hard-punch product as its translations but I am not sure if you actually say these. Thanks in advance for your help. Quote
889 Posted September 18, 2020 at 02:53 AM Report Posted September 18, 2020 at 02:53 AM In English I think it depends on the context. Words like blockbuster and smash hit are very similar, but only work in certain contexts. Knockout has very limited use; in the past it might have been used to describe an exceptionally attractive woman. Hard-punch product is Chinese English at its best. 1 Quote
Kenny同志 Posted September 18, 2020 at 03:04 AM Author Report Posted September 18, 2020 at 03:04 AM Thanks for your help 889. I think these are perfect for movies, shows, and plays. Unfortunately, 拳頭產品 is a generic term for any product that has an unthreatened competitive edge. Maybe I should describe it rather than translate it. ? Quote
Jim Posted September 18, 2020 at 03:36 AM Report Posted September 18, 2020 at 03:36 AM I immediately thought of "killer app" and tried a search for "killer product" which seems to have been used in this sense, e.g.: https://www.forbes.com/forbes/2003/1013/082.html#7aa7008038cb Wouldn't say it's as common though as the "app" usage though. 1 1 Quote
