Whatever happened to the "ant tribes"? They were all the rage around 2004-2008 and have disappeared completely from the radar.

I remember during the period 2004-2008 or so, the media was abuzz with stories about the "ant tribes", rootless young people who worked part time and had not the promises of a good future that their parents had.  Whatever happened to this movement?  Where are these people today, and what happened to them?

They were still living in the basement of my apartment building in 2013. I seem to recall a report with photos in a Dutch newspaper around that time. Don't know what happened since.
