Tomsima Posted December 10, 2020 at 08:44 PM Report Posted December 10, 2020 at 08:44 PM As title - is there any big online database of old Chinese books that are outside copyright restrictions and searchable/viewable like the internet archive at archive.org? I'm looking for a few books that are easily available in physical form on kongfz.com but buying on this kind of website is very awkward right now, being based in the UK during a pandemic... Quote
Shelley Posted December 10, 2020 at 10:40 PM Report Posted December 10, 2020 at 10:40 PM There are lots on Project Gutenberg. This is page one of 25 pages brought up by the search word "chinese" https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/search/?query=chinese&submit_search=Go! All online and viewable and downloadable in various formats. Quote
Tomsima Posted December 10, 2020 at 11:43 PM Author Report Posted December 10, 2020 at 11:43 PM Thanks Shelley, I had overlooked project Gutenberg. That being said, it looks like it's all pretty mainstream stuff, I'm specifically looking for some rare books from the turn of the twentieth century I'm more looking for a Chinese website that might be used among academics in China Quote

Jim Posted December 11, 2020 at 02:17 AM Report Posted December 11, 2020 at 02:17 AM I've found a few texts I needed here: https://www.suinian.com/book/ but the search function is non-existent and selection a bit random AFAICS. Quote
大块头 Posted December 11, 2020 at 04:07 AM Report Posted December 11, 2020 at 04:07 AM There are Taobao stores out there who will sell you PDF scans of out-of-print books for about 10 RMB. Quote

I would search for specific books or authors in Baidu, I've always been able to find online books of that period quite easily. Even searching Baidu using meta words can get one there and yield interesting links along the way. Here are a few sites that might help My 'Go to' place for everything. Messy but full of interesting (and useful) stuff: http://www.guoxuedashi.com/ Maybe something for you here? 《四库全书》 http://skqs.guoxuedashi.com/ Not as rich in content, but more elegant : http://www.guoxue123.com/index.htm It also has its own Weibo page for interesting reads https://weibo.com/u/2113620402?s=6cm7D0&is_all=1 Poetry, but since we're in the neighbourhood, Gushiwen: https://www.gushiwen.cn/ There's also a Gushimi.org https://www.gushimi.org/ Also poetry biased but has a 现代 section with links to authors https://www.gushimi.org/shiren/xiandai/ On the other side of the pond, the Library of Congress Asian Room, as academic as they get: https://www.loc.gov/rr/asian/ChineseDB2.html Harvard also has an Asian Library, I don't have the links handy but you can probably find them easily and even get a user name, which I can't. Last but not least, the Chinese Text Project has an incipient Republican Era section with some links https://ctext.org/republican-era with several texts waiting in its Wiki section: https://ctext.org/wiki.pl?if=en Happy hunting! 3 1 2 Quote
