Numerology name English translation?

Recommended Posts

A numerologist in Hong Kong gave us this name from our birth dates and names.

Google translate and other translaters give us names in English that are not correct.

Bertrand, Berente.

These translate back into something else in Chinese.

What is the correct pinyin translation for this word?

貝朗特

Thanks so much

Bèi Lǎngtè, where Bèi is the family name and Lǎngtè is two syllables read lǎng-tè.

As an aside, I've been told that a couple of fourth tones, like you have in your name, tend to make a name sound a bit strident and are sometimes avoided when picking names.

Thanks.  So these are just names? Do they have any meaning?

If those strident tones weren't placed in the names, then what would be the Chinese character name of 貝朗特.  ?

I'm really struggling to understand your questions, it seems like you might be mixing up the various concepts of characters, tones, translations, transliterations, and pinyin.

貝朗特 is already Chinese characters, so I don't know what the "Chinese character name" of it would be other than itself. You can't separate tones from characters — tones are intrinsic in the pronunciation, and each character has one or a few pronunciations in any given form of Chinese. Cantonese, the dominant form of Chinese in Hong Kong, doesn't use pinyin, which is a transliteration system for Mandarin, the dominant form of Chinese in mainland China. Meanwhile, transliteration from English to Chinese (of any form) is not lossless — you can't always know for certain what the original English was from a transliterated name.

貝朗特 could in theory be a Chinese name, as 貝 can be a surname (albeit an uncommon one), but it looks like it's more likely a transliteration of an English name like Blunt, Brand, or similar (using its Mandarin Chinese pronunciation as a basis).

Indeed, it looks like somebody has collapsed BERTRAND BerenTE into Bèi Lǎngtè.

Yes, you can find meanings in those characters, just as you can find meanings in many English names like Sandy Walker. Just that in both Chinese and English names are usually taken as names alone, without cognisance of the underlying meaning.

Thanks for your responses.

The whole thing is a little confusing to me.

Basically what I'm looking for is the closest english translation for this word / collspsed name. 貝朗特

Maybe there is no real single meaning for it.  It's just a word?

It's some sort of name, probably a transliterated name from English, such as Blunt or Brand. Alternatively, it could be a native Chinese name, which would be pronounced Bèi Lǎngtè in Mandarin or Bui3 Long5dak6 in Cantonese (this is less likely, as 貝 is not a common surname and 特 is not common in given names). Or it would mean "shell bright special" if you take the literal meaning of each character, an essentially meaningless phrase.

Well, you said the guy was a numerologist.

There are various ways of analysing Chinese names to decide whether they're auspicious. This is really a form of fortune telling, and there are whole books written on the subject. None of which I've read.

But there is one simple method appropriate for a numerologist in which you add up the strokes in the name in traditional form, then consult a chart like this:

So the stroke count for your name 貝朗特 is 7+11+10=28.

Let's find your future!

Oh oh.

難逃惡運 “Hard to Escape Misfortune"

Maybe you didn't tip the guy enough.
