Same thing happens with beer. While most westerners would think it a silly question to ask whether you want your beer cool, in China it is actually a decision one is routinely called on to make. More than once I've been handed a beer right off the shelf instead of from a refrigerated cabinet.

For sure. When I order a beer , there's never a chance for confusion because I put it right in the order: 一瓶啤酒冰的，你有冰的吗？行，来个冰的吧！When out in the sticks and is no 冰的 I have been known to drink a 常温 beer and many a "its fall, turn off the fridges now" 室温 somewhat 凉 beer.
