calculatrix Posted May 11, 2021 at 07:10 AM Report Posted May 11, 2021 at 07:10 AM Hello language experts, just for fun I am colletcing translations of the sentence "today will be yesterday tomorrow" or "today is tomorrows yesterday" in as many languages as possible. Could you translate it into Chinese for me? Thank you. Quote
Jim Posted May 11, 2021 at 08:22 AM Report Posted May 11, 2021 at 08:22 AM Not an expert but I think 明天今天已是昨天 should do it; I searched to see if anything similar existed on the native web but while I didn't find that I did see there was a work of reportage titled 明天已成今日 ETA which might suggest replacing the 是 in my version with 成 which would also work 1 Quote
NanJingDongLu Posted May 11, 2021 at 10:30 AM Report Posted May 11, 2021 at 10:30 AM 3 hours ago, calculatrix said: "today is tomorrows yesterday" I think it depends on what sort of feeling you're trying to give when you say it, but if your goal is to just simply express that meaning to someone, 今天是明天的昨天 would work fine. 3 hours ago, calculatrix said: "today will be yesterday tomorrow" This could have some slightly more complex grammar like Jim posted. "tomorrow, today is already yesterday" or "tomorrow, today will become yesterday". Could you be more precise with the wording you're looking for? 1 2 Quote

Cool. Yes my goal is simply to state that fact. Just to have a funny example sentence. (I'm currently a bit bored from all these school book dialogues). 2 hours ago, Jim said: 明天今天已是昨天 or 明天今天已成昨天 That sounds less static and with more emphasis on the passing of time, I think. Thank you at both of you. I will add both of your translations into my list. Here's some others I collected: 今日は明日には昨日になる (Japanese) Heute wird morgen gestern sein (German) Quote

Lu Posted May 11, 2021 at 01:52 PM Report Posted May 11, 2021 at 01:52 PM In case you're interested in Dutch: "Today will be yesterday tomorrow" - 'Vandaag is morgen gisteren' is the correct translation, but as this can mean both 'today will be yesterday tomorrow' (as you intended) and 'today, yesterday is tomorrow' it comes out rather mysterious. "Today is tomorrow's yesterday" - 'Vandaag is het gisteren van morgen', not ambiguous, though a bit less poetic. 2 Quote
