Ferno Posted September 27, 2005 at 02:40 AM Report Posted September 27, 2005 at 02:40 AM it should be simple but.. 在屋顶和我爱的人 ?? 和 has several meanings, but I can tell you that it's pronounced "he" in the lyric, not huo, (no tone info though, since it's a song) and I have no idea what 我爱的人 is supposed to mean... roddy Posted September 27, 2005 at 03:05 AM Report Posted September 27, 2005 at 03:05 AM Broadly speaking XXX 的 Y = Y (relative clause) XXXX so 我爱的人 = 人 (relative clause) 我爱 or 'The person that I love' So 'On the roof top with the person I love' The initial subject, 我, is just missed out. It could possibly be someone else up there, but 'My dad's up on the roof with my boyfriend' wouldn't make such a good song, so we can assume it's 我. Roddy Quote

gougou Posted September 27, 2005 at 09:41 AM Report Posted September 27, 2005 at 09:41 AM OK, two people that know much more about Chinese than I do have already accepted the sentence as is, so this is likely to end in embarassment, but is that sentence correct/complete? I would have expected 和我爱的人在屋顶 or 在屋顶和我爱的人 + verb. Quote
roddy Posted September 27, 2005 at 10:11 AM Report Posted September 27, 2005 at 10:11 AM It's a song lyric, so if there are any rules that Chinese actually consistently follows, they'll have been chucked out the window for this one. You can read the full lyrics here. Roddy Quote

Ferno Posted September 28, 2005 at 03:34 AM Author Report Posted September 28, 2005 at 03:34 AM Learn 的.和= and/with' date=' here it means with.[/quote'] yes I need to learn de :o oh and one definition of 和 is "he4" .. 'respond with singing' [this is probably not what it seems, I don't know Mandarin]... since the lyric previous to this one was another singer saying "在屋顶唱着你的歌" (on the rooftop singing your song)... well, you can see how I could have gotten confused, right?
