Observer Posted July 4, 2021 at 11:42 AM Report Posted July 4, 2021 at 11:42 AM I hope this is the right place to post, apologies if it isn't ! I am having trouble with the following text (a conversation), I understand the words but I can't grasp the meaning... A: 老婆,昨天亲热一下,有效果吗? B:有喜了 A: 开玩笑 B:管不着 My problem is I can't figure how the first question leads on to the reply, which I think means that B is pregnant. But if that is the case, why does A refer to the previous day? Or is there a different meaning completely? Thanks a lot for any help on this. 1 Quote
Jim Posted July 4, 2021 at 02:50 PM Report Posted July 4, 2021 at 02:50 PM 亲热 is a euphemism for sexual intercourse, so he's asking in jocular fashion if the sex they had yesterday has produced any results. 1 Quote

Why does he add 一下, is it just to complete the sentence or is it more specific....? Not sure why he thinks there will be a result the next day though !!!! Thanks again, I would never have got this far on my own... Quote

Why does he add 一下, is it just to complete the sentence or is it more specific....? The 一下 is just a speech mannerism employed to keep from sounding too "direct" or too formal or serious. This is often used to soften daily speech, it is 口语 -- vernacular. For example, especially in the south, one rarely says the textbook 请问 and almost always says 请问一下 instead. It's less "pushy." It just feels more polite. 10 hours ago, Observer said: Not sure why he thinks there will be a result the next day though !!!! They are kidding around. It is banter. That's the point of the next part: A: 开玩笑 B:管不着 1 Quote
