Zeppa Posted July 20, 2021 at 11:20 AM Report Posted July 20, 2021 at 11:20 AM Could some kind person tell me the characters on both sides of this poster. I know the main heading means you should study Marxist and Leninist books, and I can piece the characters together, but what about the sides? characters and/or pinyin. I think it means 'persist in studying for many years and that will certainly be advantageous', or so I was told when I took it in 1975. Many thanks in advance. Quote

NinKenDo Posted July 20, 2021 at 12:13 PM Report Posted July 20, 2021 at 12:13 PM Hey @Zeppa curious where this was, like Lu said, it's a very idiosyncratic typography. 1 Quote
Jim Posted July 20, 2021 at 01:55 PM Report Posted July 20, 2021 at 01:55 PM It's a village propaganda mural rather than a poster by the looks of it, you tend to get the style of the best calligrapher handy. 1 Quote
Lu Posted July 20, 2021 at 02:15 PM Report Posted July 20, 2021 at 02:15 PM This is certainly good calligraphy. The style is idiosyncratic, but it has clearly been made by someone who knew what they were doing. 1 Quote
Zeppa Posted July 20, 2021 at 02:48 PM Author Report Posted July 20, 2021 at 02:48 PM Thanks very much, Lu. Yes, mural makes more sense. This trip to China was the first time I realized I like taking photos. I am putting these old photos together as a book, but it will be a draft as there is so much one could add, so I may do more work on it later. The more I look through the photos, the more I like this picture, actually. It's rather powerful. It isn't one of those standardized groups of worker, peasant and soldier, all grinning into the sunrise - which I also like but one can have enough of them. As to where it was, it seems to have been at the Chiliying commune near Zhengzhou. These people seem to have visited it too, including the local militia group parading with their rifles, which we also saw: https://www.ncuscr.org/program/congressional-committee-staff-delegation-china-1976 2 Quote
madizi Posted August 13, 2021 at 05:35 AM Report Posted August 13, 2021 at 05:35 AM The calligraphy of 年 is really unique. At first glance I thought it is 丰. Quote
Lu Posted August 13, 2021 at 08:30 AM Report Posted August 13, 2021 at 08:30 AM The calligraphy of 必 is also quite unique, to me at least. I like what the calligrapher did with these characters. Quote
Tomsima Posted August 13, 2021 at 09:37 AM Report Posted August 13, 2021 at 09:37 AM This way of writing 必 is very typical in 隶书 calligraphy, with 清代金石派 calligraphers like 赵之谦 taking older looking characters and writing them in this style. Quote
889 Posted August 13, 2021 at 09:50 AM Report Posted August 13, 2021 at 09:50 AM There are several online 书法字典 that help unravel these. Truly unique forms are very rare. Here for example is the entry for 必 from one. http://shufa.chaziwang.com/shufa-2273.html 1 Quote
