crouchingdragon Posted September 29, 2005 at 01:57 PM Report Posted September 29, 2005 at 01:57 PM Kindly can someone give me in pinyin the expression for a common meal. I heard a term once and I believe it to be two words/characters. The context that I heard it used was in reference to an invitation to come to someone house for a simple meal consiting of mainly leftovers. thanks Quote
wai ming Posted September 29, 2005 at 03:01 PM Report Posted September 29, 2005 at 03:01 PM Is it biàn fàn (便饭)? Quote
crouchingdragon Posted September 29, 2005 at 04:01 PM Author Report Posted September 29, 2005 at 04:01 PM biàn fàn (便饭) The term that I am searching ended with 'fan3' but I am 60 per cent sure didn't have bian4. Are there other possibilities ? Many thanks ! Quote
geraldc Posted September 29, 2005 at 04:21 PM Report Posted September 29, 2005 at 04:21 PM 烂饭? Any idea what the initial letter was? With left overs you sometimes 炒饭.... Quote
elina Posted September 29, 2005 at 04:39 PM Report Posted September 29, 2005 at 04:39 PM Maybe 剩饭 sheng4 fan4 Quote

crouchingdragon Posted September 29, 2005 at 09:35 PM Author Report Posted September 29, 2005 at 09:35 PM The word I was searching for was 'Jiachang2'. I was told -perhaps erroneously, that this term is for a simple, ordinary meal. Would it be best to say 'jiachang fan4' ? Thanks to all, Quote
geraldc Posted September 29, 2005 at 10:01 PM Report Posted September 29, 2005 at 10:01 PM Are you sure it wasn't jia1can1? 家餐 Quote
elina Posted September 29, 2005 at 10:54 PM Report Posted September 29, 2005 at 10:54 PM In Chinese, usually we use 家常便饭 jia1 chang2 bian4 fan4 to express this meaning, but there are four Chinese characters here. Quote
gougou Posted September 30, 2005 at 01:35 AM Report Posted September 30, 2005 at 01:35 AM There is also 家常菜 (jia1chang2cai4). I am not sure whether jia1chang2 on its own has the same meaning. Quote
