Some dictionaries have 難過 nan2 guo4 as two seperate characters, others have them as a di-syllabalic word meaning "sad" (not sure what the individual characters mean, they have too many meanings). Anyway, is this used as "sad" colloquially?

難 1 character, 1 syllable

過 2 characters, 2 syllables...

難 hard, difficult

過 to pass, to cross, to spend (time), to pass (time), to live

難過 the times are hard to pass by, very true when you are sad

IMO, atune to message #2, a better translation to English for 難過 is "in times of hardship" or plainly "full/burdened/saddened of difficulties."

The term 苦 is often used as a synonym.

long-suffered?

难过:1、n.sadness v. feel sorry

eg:他的至交去世了,他很难过。

2、lead a hard living/life

eg: 他下岗了,而一家老小都靠他照顾,生活很难过。
