Lu Posted October 11, 2005 at 04:12 PM Report Posted October 11, 2005 at 04:12 PM Disclaimer: I don't know music genres. Some of the music below might not count as rock at all, and I'm not sure what are the borders of hardrock. But it'll only cost you Y20 per cd so just try it out. Also, this list is not complete. No. 1 Beijing rocker, the grandfather of Chinese rock: Cui Jian 崔建. Still going strong, and very good. Some CDs are Music for a new long march 新长征路上的摇滚, Power of the powerless 无能的力量 (I might have gotten the Chinese slightly wrong). Some other classic bands, mostly from the 90s: No. 43 Baojia Street 鲍家界43号, I think they’re extremely good. Tang Dynasty 唐朝, metal. Band doesn’t exist anymore. One of the members was an ABC called Kaiser Kuo, he can be found on the net. Black Panther 黑豹, had some success in the West Confucius said 子曰 Cobra 眼镜蛇, all women Zero 零点, sounds like Aerosmith Some people: Xu Wei 许巍 Zheng Jun 郑钧, made a Chinese version of Coldplay’s Yellow, he sounds pretty much like that most of the time. Dou Wei 窦维, used to be in Black Panther. Nowadays he makes radically different music, not at all rock. Wang Lei 王磊, extremely good. More recent: Overload 超载 Cold Blooded Animal 冷血动物 Ouch 哎哟, ska-punk, good. Only one CD out as far as I know. Second Hand Roses 二手玫瑰, very alternative, and they have a singer in drag. Frogs 青蛙 Thin Man 瘦人 Hang on the Box 挂在盒子上, girl band making Chinglish punk. Try it out if you can find it, it’s interesting to say the least, although not necessarily good music. Hopscotch 跳房 (not sure of the Chinese), is not really rock actually, but it is alternative. Beijing band that sings in English. Taiwanese (yes apparently there is such a thing as Taiwanese rock): Relax One 轻松玩, pop-rock. One CD out, 我要轻松玩. Show An (or any other spelling) 小安, awesome and funny. The Chairman 董事长, their music sounds dark, but live they’re really funny. Chasing Sparrow, don't know there Chinese name Six Plus 六甲, about the ‘hardest’ music you can find in a normal store in Taiwan, they have some good songs. Wu Bai 伍佰 sometimes sings things that might count as rock. A-Mei 张惠妹 dito. And an internet site, there are more but I can’t think of them now: www.keepmakingsense.com (in English) Quote
badr Posted October 15, 2005 at 08:23 AM Report Posted October 15, 2005 at 08:23 AM I second the recommendation on CUI JIAN and THIN MAN. Both are excellent choices. Quote
