New Members Jerry Chin Posted December 22, 2021 at 04:01 PM New Members Report Posted December 22, 2021 at 04:01 PM I'm trying to find a word in James Legge's book "Notion of the Chinese Concerning God and Spirits." It's on page 29, note 4 at the bottom of the page. The text around this character (marked as X): 寶 宴 弘 玉 几 憑 瓊 液 陞 樂 舞 X 協 氣 凝 民 物 礽. The left part of the character looks like this: 會 (with two differences). The middle part is 田, and there is no horizontal stroke above it. The right part of the character is exactly like 羽. I've included a picture of the character in question. Any help would be much appreciated: Unicode, big5, phonetics, Mandarin, Cantonese, meaning etc. (Clicked the wrong thing below. Please ignore the spoiler.) Spoiler Spoiler Quote
Lu Posted December 22, 2021 at 07:38 PM Report Posted December 22, 2021 at 07:38 PM Hi Jerry, welcome to the forums! I'm really curious about this character now, but the picture seems to be missing? Could you try posting it again? Quote
Publius Posted December 22, 2021 at 08:46 PM Report Posted December 22, 2021 at 08:46 PM 䎖, zēng, U+4396, wubi: uljn, cangjie: casmm. A facsimile of the relevant page from 《古今圖書集成》 can be found here. A crucial difference is that in traditional font or so called 康熙字典體 (still used in Japan), the top 丷 in 曾/曽 is 八 NOT 人. 2 Quote
