scherzo Posted February 26, 2022 at 01:23 AM Report Share Posted February 26, 2022 at 01:23 AM Wiktionary asseverates "Pronunciation 3 is the exoactive derivation of pronunciation 1." Then I read What is an “exoactive” Chinese character? But I still don't grok the semantic shifts below, because the author doesn't expatiate them. Can you please expatiate, and fill in, all the gaps and steps? How did 重 semantically shift from meaning 'weighty, heavy; important; severe' ⟶ 'increase' ⟶ 'double' ⟶ 'repeat'? I use → to symbolize "to". I quoted ONLY from Axel Schuessler, ABC Etymological Dictionary of Old Chinese (2007), pp 622-3. In my question above, I never quoted from 汉字源流字典 (2010) by 谷衍奎, pp 873-4. I scanned this merely for completeness.
anonymoose Posted February 26, 2022 at 06:53 PM Report Share Posted February 26, 2022 at 06:53 PM Baidu: “重”还读chóng,就是“重复”,有又、再的意思。这一意义是由增加重量引申而来的。
