miri83 Posted March 25, 2022 at 07:38 AM Report Posted March 25, 2022 at 07:38 AM Hello, everyone. After a 20-year hiatus from learning Chinese I want to give it another go. I remember having a simple hanzi trainer that was just awesome. It was Windows only and would open up in a small window. The background was yellow and all the information was given in text areas with a white background. It had basically all the characters (one could choose between traditional and simplified) and one would have to give all the pronunciations in Pinyin to go on to the next character. You really could churn through a lot of characters with that thing and it would keep a simple statistic in one of the corners of the application to let you know where you where at. I can't for the life of me remember its name? Maybe some of the old-timers here know this one and give me its name. Thank you, Miriam Quote
roddy Posted March 25, 2022 at 10:04 AM Report Posted March 25, 2022 at 10:04 AM I'm pretty sure it's not, but it did remind me of Clavis Sinica. Quote
miri83 Posted March 25, 2022 at 11:57 AM Author Report Posted March 25, 2022 at 11:57 AM Yeah, it's not the one, but quite interesting, too. Kind of reminds me of the Wenlin dictionary app. Quote

abcdefg Posted March 25, 2022 at 01:25 PM Report Posted March 25, 2022 at 01:25 PM Could it have been "Yellow Bridge?" Quote
roddy Posted March 25, 2022 at 01:46 PM Report Posted March 25, 2022 at 01:46 PM Declan Software produced products that might fit, though you'll need to delve into the Internet Archive to find any info. Quote

Xiao Kui Posted March 25, 2022 at 08:54 PM Report Posted March 25, 2022 at 08:54 PM Was it trainchinese ? I also enjoyed it, nice dopamine effect and loved the way it kept track of how many actual characters you knew. I used it back in 2005. Trainchinese.com still features an app, but it doesn't really look like the amazing, bare bones original. Still might be worth checking out. Quote
mikelove Posted March 25, 2022 at 10:50 PM Report Posted March 25, 2022 at 10:50 PM My first thought was Clavis Sinica but that's already been ruled out. A quick Google Image search led to something I'd never heard of called "Han Trainer Pro" that seems like it might match your description, though it's maybe a bit newer than 20 years ago. Maybe some interactive CD type thing that was bundled with a textbook? (very trendy thing in the mid-to-late '90s) Quote
