TheBigZaboon Posted March 28, 2022 at 10:53 PM Report Share Posted March 28, 2022 at 10:53 PM Sorry to throw cold water on the exotic Chinese culture lure of beautiful pottery, but I don't think it has anything to do with origins or manufacturers. I'm afraid it's just an "X" to mark the center of the spot where the base of the vessal was placed on the throw wheel or lined up in the kiln for baking. I'm sure there are lots of amateur potters around here, and maybe even a few professionals, to correct both of us if we're wrong. 889 Posted March 29, 2022 at 01:48 AM Report Share Posted March 29, 2022 at 01:48 AM This isn't Jun ware of course, but certain Jun ware was numbered 一 to 十 on the base to indicate size. Perhaps this is in homage to that ancient practice.
