Cantonese & Mandarin

I appreciate that Mandarin and Cantonese speakers will not understand each other, but can they write to each other - with Chinese characters I mean! - and be understood? If they can but there are occasional problems, what are they - not all of them, I mean just some examples (if there are any)?

Thanks in advance.

(When I say Mandarin speaker, I mean - if this is ever the case - a person who can only speak Mandarin - I'm talking hypothetically)

I think that we've discussed before. But yes, you can understand a cantonese speaker by writing. Because cantonese speakers are taught standard written chinese-the same written chinese mandarin speakers are taught. Therefore, they can go back and forth. However, Cantonese speakers can read spoken mandarin, but mandarin speakers can't read spoken cantonese. Too many dialectal words in it.

Interesting - Thanks nipponman. I searched for previous posts but couldn't find what I was looking for: can't search for the words Mandarin AND Cantonese in the same post. If anyone comes across previous posts on this subject, please point me in that direction - Ta....
