Badger Posted June 24, 2022 at 03:59 AM Report Posted June 24, 2022 at 03:59 AM Am I getting much from listening to a podcast with no transcripts? I certainly do not feel like it. I feel like the learning process is mostly from learning what you did not know, and therefore a transcript is crucial. For most podcasts I can understand 98% of what is said, but recently I have been listening to more 口语 casual conversations between friends, such as 世界莫名其妙物语 https://www.ximalaya.com/yule/38212408/ , which I understand maybe like 95% due to stronger accents/quicker talking/less clear. I'd like to practice listening to more of this casual talking as it is how many people talk in real life. The issue...there are no transcripts! I am thinking of doing a project where we can get a decent amount of content like this transcripted, but seems like a big task. Anyone have any ideas how to learn more oral Chinese like this show? If I do not have transcripts I will never know what I didn't know and didn't understand. Cheers Badger Quote
Jan Finster Posted June 24, 2022 at 05:45 AM Report Posted June 24, 2022 at 05:45 AM I think Steve says it best, you do not have to understand everything: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8oDLO7GPsk You will learn small fragments with every podcast you listen to. This will build up over time. 1 Quote

KupGriye Posted June 24, 2022 at 09:15 AM Report Posted June 24, 2022 at 09:15 AM If without a transcript you understand 20% and with a transcript you understand 98%, then it's a problem of listening comprehension and ear training and you should continue to listen to the podcasts until your ears will be at par with your general chinese level. If without a transcript you understand 20% and with a transcript you understand 20%, than it's a problem of vocabulary, and listening to those podcasts will not be beneficial in my opinion. You could, though, watch mandarin dub of children shows and movies, where they use a child's vocabulary. That way you can start training your ears right now and not wait because of vocabulary limitations. For example, here is an episode of Dragon Ball In chinese: https://www.37ou.com/play/110031-1-1.html Quote
