Kechen Posted December 2, 2022 at 12:25 PM Report Posted December 2, 2022 at 12:25 PM Hi, I would like to apply to ICLP, and I'm preparing to get a good result at the entry-level test so to achieve in three terms (even four if necessary) the second highest level, the so called "Level 700". However, I've found a lot of tips about the lower levels, but nothing about how level 700 works. I would to like to hear something from those who have reached it. From the official website I can only read a list of textbooks, but nothing about which are the "core textbooks", how reading/listening/writing classes works... Thank you! ? Quote
OneEye Posted December 3, 2022 at 06:59 AM Report Posted December 3, 2022 at 06:59 AM The core textbook at each level is listed as "X01" on their site, where X is the level number. 701 is "Speech Series: Real World," aka 社會大學, a series of recorded public talks given by various experts and intellectuals. At that level, you're going to have more freedom as to which classes you can take, as people are generally taking classes that are more tailored to their personal needs—so if I were there, I might take a classical Chinese course and The Independent Reader in addition to 社會大學. (full disclosure: I didn't attend ICLP, but I know several people who did, and I spent a lot of time learning about their program so I could model my self-study on their curriculum) Quote
Kechen Posted December 3, 2022 at 08:53 AM Author Report Posted December 3, 2022 at 08:53 AM Thank you for your answer, I had read on this forum that "Speech Series: Real World" should be the core textbook, but both the Light Fellowship Guide for ICLP (2018), and a girl who has studied at ICLP and that I've contacted through the Internet, say that at level 700 is up to the students to choose all the courses (she has studied "The Independent Reader" as core text). So I'm a bit confused: if I am completely free, I'll choose "The Independent Reader" (I'm already studying it, but I'd like to revise the material with a teacher), "Interpretation" and "Advanced Writing", and I'll use the 1-to-1 classes for Classical Chinese. Could it be that at 700 Level even the core text can be chosen among a group of courses that they offer? Do you think that if I send an e-mail will they give me some information? Quote
OneEye Posted December 3, 2022 at 12:43 PM Report Posted December 3, 2022 at 12:43 PM Yeah, I've also heard it's possible to opt for a different "core" textbook at the 700 level. The Independent Reader is a good choice (although 社會大學 is also excellent). I'm sure they'll be helpful if you email them. After all, they want students. Quote
Kechen Posted December 6, 2022 at 09:41 AM Author Report Posted December 6, 2022 at 09:41 AM I've just received their answer, and they have told me that core classes for Level 6 and 7 are "Aspects of Life in Taiwan" and "Speech Series: Real World" respectively. But at Level 6 and above, students are no longer required to take the core class if their interest and learning focus lies elsewhere. Quote
