frozenmyth Posted October 14, 2005 at 02:11 PM Report Posted October 14, 2005 at 02:11 PM I remember years ago, 10 years ago or a bit more, many HK people I met in the U.K.kind of looked down on other Chinese who did not speak Cantonese. I did not really see much senses in such mentality because Cantonese is just one of the many Chinese dialects; moreover, it's not even the national language as Mandarin has been for long. One functions, if not as the primary one, of language is for communication. It's actually good, and in my opinion, and actually necessary to educate people to use one common language while being allowed to keep their other preferred dialects within a nation. Maybe because of HK's special past history made it special, and the people in that tiny part of China (or when it was a British concession) feel somehow superior to other Chinese in some (or every) ways? It's a tiny city, but is still well known internationally and did very well economically (hence high living standard). I also knew many HK people even thought of people of Taiwan stupid or not as smart as HK people. Never learned if HK people would be described as hating the people of Taiwan though. From what I have been learning, observing , and analyzing, more and more people in some parts of inner China (maniland China) started to see HK differetly from the past as those mainlanders improve their living standard. Many mainlanders probably still hope to go to HK or through HK for better living standard, but more and more see other cities in inner China (mainland) with better potentials. For one reason or another, more and more HK people also learned, are still learning, or will gradually learn to think of the mainlanders differently from the past. Less and less contempts but rather a new look, is needed, eventually. Quote
Ian_Lee Posted October 15, 2005 at 02:49 AM Report Posted October 15, 2005 at 02:49 AM Actually the passion is much more complicated than just love and hate. (1) Proud -- cheer for the China Olympic Medalists (But don't hesitate to take over those 2nd-tier Mainland athletes and train them in the China--HK Team so that one day may beat the China athletes.) (2) Sorrowful -- every year during 6/4 vigil when the whole world almost forgets including most Mainlanders. (3) Fear -- during the time of Avian Flu and SARS on everyone crossing the border. (4) Sympathy -- donated $millions every year to the Yangtze flooding victims during the '90s. (5) Angry -- after hearing that all those donated money have been racketeered by the corrupt officials. (6) Despise -- after witnessing the girls from Hunan and Sichuan dominated the local sex industry; (7) Dislike -- after being cut the line by visitors from Mainland when you queue up for half hour at the Space Mountain Ride in Disneyland. (8 ) Sarcastic -- after hearing story of Shanghai fumble, i.e. magnetic levitated railroad becomes white elephant. (9) What? You dare -- after hearing Guangzhou construct a bigger airport than HK's and their officials bragged that Guangzhou would become the hub of Pearl River Delta Economic Circle. (10) Shocked -- after learning that most foodstuffs imported from Mainland, i.e. pork, fish, veggie,.....etc may carry poison. (11) Disgust -- after newspaper printing front page photos on how those exotic animals were killed brutally and openly in the Guangzhou market (But forget that they were the frequent customers in those restaurants that serve exclusively exotic food). (12) Love -- of course the RMB with Mao's Big Head!! But I would say "Hate" is none of them. Quote
