New Members HootJr Posted August 1, 2023 at 07:30 PM New Members Report Posted August 1, 2023 at 07:30 PM My wife was born in china but came to USA years ago on a political asylum visa. How risky is it for her to return to see her family for a month? Quote
aone Posted August 2, 2023 at 12:24 AM Report Posted August 2, 2023 at 12:24 AM Can't tell more. My advice is to let your wife stay in the US and not go back to China ever! If she really wants to see her family, bring her family to the United States! Quote
Lu Posted August 2, 2023 at 08:13 AM Report Posted August 2, 2023 at 08:13 AM Short answer: It doesn't seem like a good idea. Longer answer: As with many China things, it depends. Was your wife in imminent trouble, or was it more of a precautionary move? Did she do something herself, or was she just part of a group that the government didn't like? Is the group still being watched/persecuted, or has the government since moved on? is she in touch with other people who were involved with things similar to what she did, and who are still in China? If so, she should ask them how things are. And how important is the planned visit? Is it her last chance to see a dying parent, or just a regular catch-up? In the latter case, I'd definitely not go. Perhaps she can meet her family in a third country, on a holiday? That seems a lot safer. I was going to ask if she has American citizenship now, since in theory that would make a trip safer, but in the past years the Chinese government has not been shy about arresting people of Chinese descent even if they have foreign passports, so if your wife is now American, that wouldn't make much of a difference. 2 Quote

Sounds, from what little we know, from what little you've said regarding the circumstances, like a very bad idea. If she pissed off the Chinese government back then, it would be nuts to just assume they have forgotten about it now. 1 1 Quote
