Song You Shen Posted October 16, 2005 at 02:11 AM Report Posted October 16, 2005 at 02:11 AM So I'm trying to gather information about the word 福. Specifically the history of it, with a breakdown of it's past. I was wondering if anyone knows of any sites that would help me in this research? Also, I can't seem to single the first radical out in NJStar, and I don't know what the pronounciation for it. Could someone help me out there. Thanks... Youshen Quote
gougou Posted October 16, 2005 at 02:23 AM Report Posted October 16, 2005 at 02:23 AM In Microsoft's IME, you can get 礻 by typing shi4. Maybe that works for NJStar as well. Quote

Long Zhiren Posted October 16, 2005 at 05:26 AM Report Posted October 16, 2005 at 05:26 AM Try this website. http://www.internationalscientific.org/ Is the etymology the history for which you seek? You'll get: 六書通, 金文编, and 續甲骨文编 (up to 4000 years background) for 福 and many other characters. Quote

Long Zhiren, I was trying to use that site earlier today, but it never worked ... but I tried it just now and it worked! Something must be different in the link you gave me, thanks. Youshen Quote

zhwj Posted October 17, 2005 at 04:18 AM Report Posted October 17, 2005 at 04:18 AM There's also the famous 长寿福 at Wanggongfu in Beijing. It makes the right-hand side of the 福 look like a 寿, along with other magical properties. Here's a site with a Flash animation showing the components. And an image search for 百福图 brings up some nice renditions (most of which are in the Int'l Sci index, but nicer-looking). Quote
Song You Shen Posted October 17, 2005 at 04:18 AM Author Report Posted October 17, 2005 at 04:18 AM awesome, thanks! Weird though, cause I looked up field, and it didn't give me that. Youshen Quote
