Graded Chinese Reader 1000 Words

Hello everyone. It is my first post here. Thank you for the great book recommendations; my TBR list has grown tremendously because of you. But the “real” Chinese literature will have to wait, because I have begun to study Chinese only a year ago.

 

Right now I am working through “Graded Chinese Reader 1000 Words”, and I have become a bit stuck in the story called 谁生活得更美好 by 张洁

 

It is a story about two guys who meet the same girl. The good guy really likes her, and the bad one is making fun of her but on the other hand wants her to fall in love with him.

 

Here is the sentence that I cannot translate.

 

他要做的就是想要赢得她的注意， 注意他与其他人的不样， 因为他认为他比别人高贵。

 

Right now I have this: <something something> that she become interested in him, more interested than in others, because he thinks that he is better than other people.

 

I cannot translate 他要做的就是想要赢得, even though I understand all the words.

 

Please advise.

他要做的 what he wants to do/has to do

就是 is just

想要 he wants to

赢得 win

她的注意 her attention/for her to notice [him]

What he wants is to win her attention. Or, in more natural English, he just wants her to notice him.

You got the next part slightly wrong as well, it should be:

 

注意 to notice

他与其他人的不样 how he is not the same as other people

Thanks a lot! It does help. I could not connect the parts before and after 就是, and I did not realise that two 要s had different  meanings in the sentence. And yes, the second part should be something like "notice that he is not like other people".
