Mugi Posted October 17, 2005 at 04:29 AM Report Posted October 17, 2005 at 04:29 AM What do you mean by harmonic and transmissive words? Can you give us some examples in English? Quote
Song You Shen Posted October 17, 2005 at 04:36 AM Author Report Posted October 17, 2005 at 04:36 AM - Harmonics: Words formed with the fact taken as the basis for pronunciation in simile and add other signs or words to form a new word. - Transmissives: Words that are under one heading and in the same idea are jointly receptive These are the definitions I have for them, sorry I couldn't be more helpful in this. I don't entirely understand them either. Youshen Quote
nnt Posted October 17, 2005 at 07:02 AM Report Posted October 17, 2005 at 07:02 AM - Harmonics 形聲 : ;「籃」字形旁是「竹」,表示它是竹製物品,聲旁是「監」 - Transmissives 轉注 : 「考」、「老」 - Borrowed Words 假借 , when you use one character for another , "自”本来是“鼻”的象形字 , not the kind of modern borrowed words! see here : http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%85%AD%E4%B9%A6 It helps to know classic Chinese ! Song You Shen Posted October 17, 2005 at 04:52 PM Author Report Posted October 17, 2005 at 04:52 PM Nnt, could you explain "transmissive" and "borrowed" words? I don't seem to understand these ones. Thanks. Youshen Quote
nnt Posted October 17, 2005 at 05:51 PM Report Posted October 17, 2005 at 05:51 PM From : http://weber.ucsd.edu/~dkjordan/chin/hbchilang-u.html Zhŭanzhù 轉注, sometimes translated "figurative extension" [of meaning] refers to characters formed by modifying the shape of a character to produce another one of a related meaning. Thus it is said that "corpse" shī 尸 is derived from "person" rén 人. Jiăjiè 假借 refers to characters borrowed from others of similar pronunciation. Thus wàn 萬 originally referred to the scorpion, but was borrowed by the homonymous word meaning ten thousand which is often simplified to 万, apparently originally a surname. Simplified characters has also used 假借 (后 "empress" has been borrowed to simplify 後 "after, afterwards, then, etc...") Quote
