Can you still set up QQ outside of China?

Hi all,

 

Long time no see. I've been trying to get back into my old QQ email account but it's locked down due to verification issues. The usual. Once upon a time I did get QQ working on my laptop in the UK, and I'm fairly certain I didn't need a Chinese phone number and all that jazz. I tried to set up a new one but I couldn't even get it working because it wouldn't register a UK phone number. Have they locked things down further or am I misremembering?

@LiMo -- The impression I've gotten from my younger Chinese friends these last couple of years is that QQ is "yesterday's app." Not much used any more; not well supported. I let my QQ account go and switched to 微信 for those functions. Not sure if it's possible to get access to an inactive account, regardless of your current physical location.

I have the same problem in China. Sometimes I have to use my mobile phone version to scan and verify. It's difficult to use.

If scanning a Chinese phone number doesn't work, maybe give QQ International a shot like @aone suggested. Or just set up a new WeChat account instead if you mainly need it for contacting folks back in China. Either way, hope you're able to get something working again without too much hassle!
