ala Posted November 30, 2005 at 08:00 PM Report Posted November 30, 2005 at 08:00 PM Don't know who said it, but "A language is a dialect with an army." A shprakh iz a dialekt mit an armey un a flot. (A language is a dialect with an army and a navy.) Max Weinreich writing in the Yivo-Bleter in 1945 in the original Yiddish. Quote
atitarev Posted December 1, 2005 at 12:17 AM Author Report Posted December 1, 2005 at 12:17 AM Strange situation with the Swiss German dialect. Standard German (High German - Hochdeutsch) is one of the offical languages, although the Swiss German (Schwyzertütsch or Schweizerdeutsch) is the language of all the Swiss Gremans with an army but no navy (no seas around Switzerland). No attempt is made to make this dialect official and is almost not used in a written form. It is very incomprehensible to German speakers outside Switzerland. Quote
