Zeppa Posted December 8, 2023 at 05:47 PM Report Share Posted December 8, 2023 at 05:47 PM Reading the Vittles newsletter - it should be available free of subscription in substack - Jonathan Nunn writes that there are so many Chinese students in London, particularly East London, that restaurants start using Chinese social media, and may not be on the radar of other Londoners. Yunnan is the latest province to have two restaurants. View in browser Vittles Reviews: There Is Always Another Province Two new Yunnanese restaurants in London’s fastest growing Chinatown. London is lucky! It's so long since I've had Yunnan food. Most of the Chinese fare in my part of Texas is "Very-Americanized Fujian or Taiwan." You are in luck if you want egg rolls or General Tso's chicken, but not if you want a bowl of 过桥米线。
tobyiana Posted January 12, 2024 at 12:53 AM Report Share Posted January 12, 2024 at 12:53 AM What are the best Chinese restaurants in London in 2024? I really struggle to find great places and fear it may be because I'm off the grid especially with Reddit and SM. 3 uncles is my favourite cantonese place but very expensive and limited choice. CulturalClimber Posted February 6, 2024 at 05:33 AM Report Share Posted February 6, 2024 at 05:33 AM That's an interesting perspective on Chinese restaurants in London marketing themselves more to students through social media. It's really cool when a city offers food from various parts of China beyond just the standard options.
Zeppa Posted February 6, 2024 at 09:44 PM Author Report Share Posted February 6, 2024 at 09:44 PM I was walking from the British Museum towards Chinatown yesterday and I think I passed three of this type of restaurant. But I'm not an expert. The snack menus looked a bit different from the usual ones. I photographed these two. I wondered about the Violently Smoked Pig Knuckles. There is more tripe on here than I usually see. Liangji Wraps is in Shaftesbury Avenue and has a website too, so maybe it is better known.. tobyiana Posted February 8, 2024 at 11:52 PM Report Share Posted February 8, 2024 at 11:52 PM So what are the good restaurants for students? Given that I'm not a student, I'll be curious to learn more.
Zeppa Posted February 10, 2024 at 09:55 PM Author Report Share Posted February 10, 2024 at 09:55 PM Was the article cut off for you? That's my only source, since I don't follow Chinese social media. Jonathan Nunn says there is a new "Chinatown" in Spitalfields. One restaurant there now has three branches: Yeye Noodle and Dumpling. https://yeyelondon.co.uk/ Cloudland (Yunnanese) may be delivery only: https://www.order.store/gb/store/cloud-land-遇见云南/eM1fEwUXXUWUCvy-z8SMZQ Yun Cross Bridge Rice Noodles (Yunnan, originally delivery-only): https://www.instagram.com/yun.crossbridge.ricenoodles/ Laodao (Xinjiang) in South-East London, near Kennington: https://www.lao-dao.com/ I don't know if these are all student restaurants. I think the area in Spitalfields is, because there are colleges near there.
