lordsuso Posted April 10, 2024 at 05:43 PM Report Posted April 10, 2024 at 05:43 PM My listening skills are pretty bad, so could someone tell me whether the language the two ladies are speaking here https://youtu.be/NojlI9LhtOY?si=C180Rulnvr9wwWHb&t=288 is Mandarin? I believe the scene is supposed to take place in Taiwan, that's why I suspect Hokkien. Thanks! Quote
jannesan Posted April 10, 2024 at 06:30 PM Report Posted April 10, 2024 at 06:30 PM The part before “动作快啊” surely isn’t Mandarin. One thing I have observed with Taiwanese shows is that often a mix of Mandarin and Taiwanese is spoken, could be mixed even in the same sentence. I think this may reflect the reality of more and more younger people barely speaking Taiwanese anymore, although I remember reading it has become more popular again. 1 Quote
Lu Posted April 11, 2024 at 07:28 AM Report Posted April 11, 2024 at 07:28 AM “Is this Mandarin or Hokkien?” Yes :-) As Jannesan says, Mandarin and Hokkien are often mixed, and that's what you see here too. The non-Mandarin language you hear is definitely Taiwanese (Minnanese, Hokkien). (Source: I lived in Taiwan for a few years and learned some Taiwanese.) Seems this is not the ideal show to watch if you want to practice your Mandarin listening skills, although of course you can still watch it if you simply enjoy the show for itself. 1 Quote
lordsuso Posted April 11, 2024 at 08:13 AM Author Report Posted April 11, 2024 at 08:13 AM Thanks to both of you that is very interesting. I am a bit relieved that they are not exclusively speaking in some Mandarin accent that I am supposed to understand. And yes Lu I think I will find an easier show to follow! 1 Quote
