New Members alitos Posted July 29, 2024 at 06:39 AM New Members Report Posted July 29, 2024 at 06:39 AM Hello.. can you help me to translate my cousin's hokkien name to mandarin.. her name is Ong Eng Lie.. thanks before Quote
honglam Posted July 30, 2024 at 07:09 AM Report Posted July 30, 2024 at 07:09 AM Well... since there's no tips on the tones, and there are still many characters with the same pronunciation in Hokkien, it's basically impossible to change phonetic alphabets into Chinese characters. Ong as a surname could be 王, 汪, 黄 or 翁. As for eng and lie, I'd say I could never find the responding characters because they are just impossible combinations in the standardized romanization of Hokkien. If these two character are non-standard romanization, then no one in this world could decipher it to get the original Chinese characters. The only good way is to find her/his parents, or the one who gave her/him this name for an exact answer. 1 Quote

If so, at least we could find her a exact surname. Or is there any document of identity, or letters, or other writings of her parents, grandparents or other even elder ancestor that is written in Chinese? They gave her a Chinese name so I think the time her family migrated abroad shouldn't be too far away from now. Quote
