First, it's not Maotai 茅台 (the famous brand); the brand is 天酿, and the label says it's made in 茅台镇 (where Maotai is made).  It also says 演艺专用 = "performing arts special use" on the front and back, so it looks like it's a prop white wine 白酒 used for plays.

Can we clear up something that I've been a little fuzzy on for a while? Maotai is a brand name for one kind of baijiu from Guizhou, right? Kweichow Moutai.

Or is Maotai an appellation, like Tennessee whiskey?  For example, Jack Daniel's is a brand name of one kind of Tennessee whiskey. But there are others such as George Dickel. Are there other kinds of maotai?

And while we're at it, Maotai is only famous because it was Mao's favorite, is that Kweichow Moutai 2014, 500ml, 53%vol. incl. original box - Catawiki

Assuming Wikipedia is correct:

Quote

Kweichow Moutai is not the only producer of maotai, nor do they own any exclusive right to the name. Maotai must simply be produced in the town of Maotai and follow the production guidelines as laid out in regulation.

And (also according to Wikipedia) Mao Zedong did appreciate Maotai, but there is a lot more to the story, including Yuan Shikai and weary soldiers' feet on the Long March.

Oh, come on, please use a real source. We know that's crap now, especially with anything regarding China. Not that it was any better in years gone by.  I remember correcting a bunch of stuff that was outdated or outright wrong about my city only to have it immediately removed in hours.

Maotai is a closely-protected brand name. This explains it more fully.

Kweichow is an old spelling for Guizhou.

You asked a question, after clearly not lifting a finger to find the beginning of an answer for yourself. I thought I'd be nice and lift that finger for you, and perhaps if you'd see that very basic source I found within about two seconds of googling, you'd realise you could actually go and make a little effort to seek some information on your own to answer your own question.

So, do go on and find a real source. The entire internet is right there. Let us know what you find, and if there's still something unclear, do ask a follow-up question.

I'm no expert, but I do drink quite a bit of 白酒。From what I understand from various baijiu distillery visits, talking to people, reading online, etc: 茅台 maotai is not a style, but rather a (the most famous) brand. Maotai mostly produces 酱香型 sauce aroma style, one of the four major styles of baijiu. There are many other brands that produce that style of baijiu.

@moutaicuriosity who knows what that bottle is worth, probably not much. Just thank your friend in Chinese style and take them out for dinner. Bring the bottle along, drink it together while cheers-ing. Sleep in next morning.
