Have you tried learning any Chinese yet?

I have not, I am still trying to apply to Shanghai University

Sorry to be blunt, but maybe this will save you lots of frustration later on, but it does not sound as if your commitment is all that great. And great it must be.

Before starting a course and committing time and money to an investment, most people would have done quite a lot of research and started the learning process in advance to get a good idea of what to expect.

If you can invest a small amount of funds into learning Chinese before starting any course, you will get a better idea of what else you need to do to learn the language.

Get a teacher or take a class, preferably in person. That should get you started, and also give you an idea about how much effort it will be for you.

Try the ChineseSkill app (chineseskill.com), that's what I used back in 2015 and I still think it's the best starting point. There's also Duolingo but I find the skill requirement higher so as a beginner you'll probably not get very far with it.

It is absolutely possible to learn Mandarin up to business fluency in 9 to 12 months. However that is an intensive immersive course, where you study in very small groups and 1on1, live in a homestay, do not study in an international city like Shanghai where English is widely spoken and are fully focused on studying, with about 30h of class a week, plus the will to immerse yourself.

If you study in a large group environment (6 or more people in a class), do not speak Mandarin at home, study fewer hours, have long breaks between courses (for example at a university) and are surrounded by other English speakers (for example in the Chinese department at a university where only foreigners study or international nightlife in Shanghai ) you might just find yourself at basic conversation level after a year.

Completely depends on how you do it.
